Unique Festival a huge success

Western Australia’s largest and most unique all-ages event took place in Midland on Sunday 31st, with organisers reporting a massive crowd of more than 3,500 in attendance.

The Hyper Festival was staged in the grounds of Midland Gate shopping centre for the first time, which boasted three stages, markets, rides and a skatepark.

The biggest crowds turned out for New Zealand metal band Shihad, indie-rockers the Getaway Plan, and Melbourne hip hop act Tzu.

The festival was a huge success despite the late withdrawal by headliners Birds of Tokyo.

** Ticket refund information below**  They were ably replaced by local hip-hop act Drapht, who had the main stage crowd bouncing in unison.

Festival organisers praised the energy and responsibility of the crowd, with a security and first aid reporting virtually no incidents throughout the course of the day.

Hyper is unique because it is planned and run by a Festival Team of young people who have been meeting weekly for the past few months, with support from key industry professionals, including the West Australian Music Association and local promoter Paul Sloan from Supersonic.

As Coordinator Bonnie Davies (24) wryly observed:

“It’s the first time in Australia that I know of, that a large shopping centre has actually invited thousands of young people to stage a rock and hip hop event in its premises!”

Hyper is an initiative of the City of Swan, with Midland Gate as the key venue partner in 2008.

The festival is also supported by major sponsors Lotterywest, Healthway - Drug Aware, Rammpaage, Department of Culture and the Arts, and a host of others.

There’s just nothing else quite like Hyper.
